Food manifests in our culture in numerous and various ways. As a substance, it provides energy and generates pleasure. As an image, it holds our gaze and arouses desire. Creating a food image makes it possible to commemorate significant moments and share highlights or expectations, which, like our food, pass and perish.
The conference Food as Image, Image as Food, was held in relation to the Food exhibition, currently displayed at the museum. The conference discussed the role of food in our culture and focused on the rituals and traditions surrounding it, and how design affects them. The conference examined the subject from three perspectives: food as a resource, both real and symbolic, food as an image – the difference between the images we create and our self-image, and food as a story – what are the stories we tell about food and what story it tells about us. The conference was held at Design Museum Holon on 19 July 2023.
